History
The first American Eagle Silver dollar was minted in 1986 after deliberation during the 1970s and 1980s regarding selling the country's silver stockpiles as it was believed that the state's reserves far exceeded its strategic need for the precious metal. Selling off the silver, however, led to a decline in prices, which caused consternation among some, prompting them to rally for an alternate solution. It was decided to divert the silver into coin production instead, which has resulted in the much-loved series.
Silver Eagle Coins Design specifics
The coin is 40mm in diameter with a reeded edge. Its high silver content – 99.97% – bring its weight up to 31g. A brilliant silver surface is embossed with the Walking Liberty designs of Adolph A. Weinman from the 1916-1947 50 cent piece on the obverse of the coin. The image depicts the allegorical liberty figure walking across to the east, with laurel and oak in her arms and the stars and stripes billowing in the background. The sun is also setting in the distance and the phrases "In God We Trust" and "Liberty" surround her. The reverse features the heraldic eagle designed by John Mercanti, positioned behind a shield with 13 stars above it. "United States of America," "1 Oz. Fine Silver," and "E Pluribus Unum" are also inscribed on the coin's reverse along with a mintmark.
