1957 Jefferson Nickel
The 1957 Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of 38.4 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The 1957 Jefferson Nickel is a unique coin in the sense that it has a relatively high mintage, yet it is extremely difficult to find this coin in the highest Mint State grades and Full Step varieties. It’s common in circulated grades and likely suffers from poor strike that prevent it from reaching higher designations. Careful searching is advised with this coin as there is the possibility for a wide range of strike qualities. Look for a 1957 Jefferson Nickel that has a sharp strike, excellent luster, and great overall eye appeal.
History of the 1957 Jefferson Nickel
The 1957 Jefferson Nickel could be a tough coin to locate in higher grades, and is a great coin for those collectors who enjoy the challenge of the hunt for that perfect coin. Considering the lower mintages available, the prices at mid-grade are still on the higher side compared to some of the others in the series, and if located in the highest grades, would likely command a hefty premium. Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson Nickel after winning a design competition for the coin. The original designs of these early coins in the series showcased Thomas Jefferson’s head in profile on the obverse of the coin, and featured his Monticello home on the reverse.
1957 Jefferson Nickel Value
The 1957 Jefferson Nickel value ranges from around $700 to upwards of $4,300 for the highest Mint State and Full Step grades of the coin. The highest these grades have been found are MS63 and Full Step 66 which is relatively low compared to the availability of other uncirculated coins in the series. The Jefferson Nickel is still in production today although the designs have shifted somewhat over the years.
