1953-S Washington Quarter

1953-S Washington Quarter

The 1953-S Washington Quarter had just over 14 million total coins minted at the San Francisco Mint. This coin is possible to find in the highest, uncirculated grades. In fact, it is one of the easiest to find in Gem condition despite it being the lowest mintage of this year. The 1953-S Washington Quarter is more common in Gem condition, but a higher grade coin from this date is very affordable compared to some of the other coins in the silver Washington Quarter series.

History of the 1953-S Washington Quarter

The 1953-S Washington Quarter is an accessible and relatively easy coin to find compared to the other coins minted in this year. The 1953 and 1953-D Washington Quarter were relatively rare in higher grades. The 1953-S Washington Quarter had a low mintage, which meant that many of the coins were sought after and saved immediately, thus making the value of higher grade coins go down in price due to how easy they are to find. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birthday. It features a portrait of Washington on the obverse of the coin, and an American Bald Eagle with wings spread wide, clutching a bundle of arrows and hovering over an olive branch on the reverse.
