1953-S Jefferson Nickel

1953-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1953-S Jefferson Nickel has a total mintage of over 19 million coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. This was only a slightly smaller mintage compared to the previous issue date at this location, and it falls somewhere in the middle for the number of coins produced at the San Francisco Mint up to this point in the series. The 1953-S Jefferson Nickel is possible to find in circulated grades and some lower Mint State grades for very affordable prices. Out of all of the coins produced between 1938 and 1960, this coin is one of the most difficult to locate with the Full Step designation. If found, it’ll definitely demand a premium.

History of the 1953-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1953-S Jefferson Nickel is a valuable coin that is worth the effort to cherrypick and find for a collection. Circulated and lower Mint State coins are much more affordable for those looking to add this special coin to their collection, and the highest grades, especially with the Full Step designation, are reserved for the most serious of collectors due to their rarity and cost. The Jefferson Nickel design was chosen during a contest and was created by Felix Schlag. The obverse of the coin showcases Thomas Jefferson in profile. The reverse of the coin features his Monticello home. You can also find the sought after ‘S’ mint mark on the reverse of the coin next to the Monticello walls. The Jefferson Nickel is still in production today.

1953-S Jefferson Nickel Value

The 1953-S Jefferson Nickel value ranges from around five hundred dollars for the highest Mint State coins which appear to max out around MS66 to upwards of $24,000 for a Full Step designation coin around MS65. This coin is difficult to find in the highest grades and would make a great investment for someone looking for key dates within the Jefferson Nickel series.
