1949-S Jefferson Nickel

1949-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1949-S Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of just over 9.7 million coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. This coin had a lower mintage than many of the others in the series, and a high Mint State coin with Full Step designations commands a higher premium than many of the same caliber in the series. It can be difficult to find this coin in higher Mint State grades above Mint State 66, and can be found at an affordable price in this grade. Cherrypicking would be wise with the 1949-S Jefferson Nickel to ensure a well-struck coin that offers what the collector seeks.

History of the 1949-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1949-S Jefferson Nickel comes in a wide range of values and grades which makes it a unique coin for collectors of all kinds within a range of budgets. The Jefferson Nickel was originally designed by Felix Schlag. He won a design contest that was chosen for this particular design. Although the design of the Jefferson Nickel has changed somewhat over the years, it’s still in production today. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson. The reverse of the coin features Jefferson’s Monticello home.

1949-S Jefferson Nickel Value

The 1949-S Jefferson Nickel value ranges from around $700 for the highest Mint State grades of the coin available, which is very reasonable, to upwards of around $15,000 for Full Step coins that have been located in Mint State 67 grades.
