1942-S Washington Quarter
The 1942-S Washington Quarter was once believed to be the rarest coin that was produced during the 1940s. This coin had a little over 19 million total mintage from the San Francisco Mint. Today, the coin is more scarce and it is possible to find it in Gem condition and other higher, uncirculated, Mint State grades. It just requires a little bit of searching.
History of the 1942-S Washington Quarter
The 1942-S Washington Quarter was more sought after during the 1950s and 1960s because it was believed to be the rarest of all 1940s Washington Quarters. Although times have changed, and it is easier to find in the present day, it can still fetch quite a few dollars in higher grades. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birthday. The coin features Washington on the obverse of the coin, and the American Bald Eagle with wings spread wide on the reverse. This is a special coin that would make a valuable addition to any Washington Quarter series collection.
