1942-D Jefferson Nickel

1942-D Jefferson Nickel

The 1942-D Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of just under 14 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. This wasn’t considered a low mintage in the series, although it was much lower than many of the other issue dates. Although it wasn’t considered a low mintage date, it is still a key date within the series, possibly due to its production during a war and a lack of circulation of those coins during that time. Plenty of the 1942-D Jefferson Nickels were in circulation, and therefore are difficult and scarce to find in uncirculated examples. This scarcity makes this a potentially expensive coin that commands a premium depending on the grade.

History of the 1942-D Jefferson Nickel

The 1942-D Jefferson Nickel is worth cherrypicking to find a beautiful specimen at an excellent value. It’s possible to find this coin in grades as high as Mint State 67 and at affordable prices compared to some of the others in the series, depending on the grade and quality. Felix Schlag was the designer for the original Jefferson Nickel, although the design has changed over the years. The coin is still in production today, making it a long-running series for collectors. The obverse of the coin showcases the left-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson and the reverse features Jefferson’s Monticello house. The “D” mint mark can be seen to the right of the Monticello house.

1942-D Jefferson Nickel Value

The 1942-D Jefferson Nickel value is around $1,000 for some of the highest grades of the coins documented. In lower Mint State grades, this coin is more expensive than many other low grades in the series, but still more affordable in its highest grades oddly enough. The 1942-D Thomas Jefferson Nickel is considered a war nickel which makes it a key date for collectors due to the uniqueness of its history and production time.
