1938 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
The 1938 Walking Liberty half dollar design began with a competition held by the Commission of Fine Arts. As the winner, Adolph Weinman was commissioned to design this coin as well as the dime. However, this is not the initial design he created and several designs were rejected before this design won approval. The 1938 issue from the Philadelphia mint does not include a mint mark and 8,152 proofs were issued. Like most Philadelphia issued coins, it is well struck. The luster ranges from satiny white to a light golden color.
1938 Walking Liberty Half Dollar Value, Scarcity, and Key Dates
The 1938 Walking Liberty Half Dollar value can be as low as $9 for one of the low-grade circulated coins and as much as $70 for higher grade uncirculated coins.1938 marked the year with lowest issue of this coin coming from the Philadelphia mint from between 1934 and 1946. As a result, it is rarer in mint and Gem condition that the other P mints of those years. Even so, this coin is still available. Even though many Walking Liberty half dollars were released during the Great Depression, many rolls of coins were still stashed away by collectors. In poor condition, the value of the silver used to make the coin is just about the same as the numismatic value of the coin. Both values are more than the face value of the coin. The Walking Liberty half dollar key dates do not include the 1938 coin from Philadelphia.
