1935-S Wheat Penny

The 1935-S Wheat Penny had a total mintage of over 38 million coins from the San Francisco Mint. This is a relatively common coin in circulated grades, and as it moves into the higher grade Mint State condition, it becomes more scarce. In the highest grades, it is believed to be nearly impossible to find, and very few have surfaced over the years. The 1935-S Wheat Penny is valuable because of its production at the San Francisco Mint, especially as many hadn’t been issued from this location for a few years.

History of the 1935-S Wheat Penny

The 1935-S Wheat Penny is possible to find well-struck with attractive surfaces. Cherrypicking is advised to find the most attractive example possible that is well-struck. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. At the time, President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the S mintmark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.
