1934 Peace Dollar
The 1934 Peace Dollar is often an underappreciated coin in terms of value in the Peace dollar series, but it does have a rich history. Many collectors overlook the 1934 Peace silver dollar as a well sought after coin due to its abundance in a number of high grades. The coin is often strongly struck with a lustre that ranges from frosty to brilliant. However, as with a lot of Peace dollars, can have yellow stains across its surfaces that are attributed to the chemicals in the bags they were stored in at one point.
History of the 1934 Peace Dollar
Silver dollars hadn’t been minted for 6 years previously to the 1934 Peace silver dollar, but in May of 1933, the U.S. government began to accept silver bullion as a payment for debts of war. Later that same year, President Roosevelt mandated the U.S. mints to buy the silver and begin producing dollars with it. The treasury was ordered to keep buying silver for coining until their stored silver was equal to one third of the value of its gold in a bid to return the value of silver to $1.29.
