1934-D Wheat Penny

1934-D Wheat Penny

The 1934-D Wheat Penny had a total mintage of over 28 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. This was a larger mintage compared to the past few years at this location, and even so, it is the last Denver minted date of the series that is considered scarce in higher grades of the red variety of the 1934-D Wheat Penny. While it is more scarce in higher grades, it’s not impossible to find. It’s well worth the effort to seek out a higher grade coin is both well-struck and attractive.

History of the 1934-D Wheat Penny

The 1934-D Wheat Penny is a valuable coin that can be hard to come by in higher Mint State red conditions. Cherrypicking is advised, as Denver minted coins were known for having a weaker strike and sometimes spotting on the reds. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the D mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.

1934-D Wheat Penny Worth

The 1934-D Wheat Penny value ranges from under $200 to upwards of $20,000. This is quite the price difference and it all depends on what you are looking for with this specific coin. The brown varieties are often more affordable while still higher, uncirculated grades. The red varieties often command a higher price. The 1934-D Wheat Penny would make a great addition to any Wheat Penny series collection.
