1927-D Wheat Penny

1927-D Wheat Penny

The 1927-D Wheat Penny had a total mintage of just over 27 million coins produced from the Denver Mint. While this is a mid-range mintage total for Denver, the coins are relatively easy to obtain from circulated grades all the way up to mid-range Mint State, uncirculated grades. Once the 1927-D Wheat Penny hits the higher Mint State grades it becomes more scarce.  The highest grades of this coin, especially in the full red varieties, is very difficult to come by.

History of the 1927-D Wheat Penny

The 1927-D Wheat Penny is a worthwhile coin to find and add to your collection, especially in higher Mint State grades. Denver minted Wheat Pennies can be notorious for a weaker strike, so cherrypicking is worth the effort to find a well-struck coin for your collection. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the D mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.

1927-D Wheat Penny Worth

The 1927-D Wheat Penny value ranges from around $1,000 to $4,000 depending on the variety. Some of the coins fall within the brown-colored category, while some are completely red. Full Reds command the highest prices, and finding this coin in Mint State in full red is a worthwhile investment for the Wheat Penny series. The Wheat Penny series is a more financially accessible series for the novice and experienced collector alike.
