1926-D Wheat Penny
The 1926-D Wheat Penny had a total mintage of just over 28 million from the Denver Mint. This mintage was just about average for the Denver minted Wheat Penny coins, and possibly due to it being a larger mintage, many went out into circulation. The 1926-D Wheat Penny is more difficult to find in the highest Mint State grades, but is relatively accessible and affordable in circulated and lower Mint State uncirculated grades.
History of the 1926-D Wheat Penny
The 1926-D Wheat Penny is a popular coin, even more so because of its Denver mint mark. Some of the Denver minted Wheat Pennies suffered from a weak strike so cherrypicking is advised to ensure you find a well-struck coin with attractive surfaces. You can find this coin in colors ranging from brown to red-brown to red. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the D mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.
1926-D Wheat Penny Worth
The 1926-D Wheat Penny value ranges from around $900 for Mint State brown varieties to $22,000 for Mint State red varieties. The 1926-D would make a valuable addition to any Wheat Penny series regardless of whether it is circulated or the highest uncirculated grade you can find.
