1922-S Peace Dollar
The San Francisco Mint started producing Peace Dollars in 1922. The 1922-S Peace Silver dollar was the first Peace Dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint and also the second most struck of all the Peace silver dollars just behind the 1923-S Peace dollar. The 1922-S Peace dollar suffers from lower level quality compared to the Peace dollars made at the Philadelphia and Denver mints. Many show weakness at the center of both sides of the coin.
1922-S Peace Dollar History
The San Francisco mint produced more than 17 million silver dollars in 1922. A lot of 1922-S are low quality, especially in the area of strike. This means the details around centers are impacted, resulting in the hair of Liberty over her ear lacking the detail that it should have had. The same happens with the weakly defined feathers around the top areas of the eagle. The quality of 1922-S Peace Dollars can be gauged by the fact that a good number of these don't even have complete rims at times.
1922-S Peace dollars were released into circulation, but the demand for them was low. Some found their way to Reno and Las Vegas casinos as well. Due to low demand, the 1922-S Peace silver dollar value was low, and many of the coins went to banks and into circulation. It’s difficult to find a 1922-S Peace dollar coin that is well-struck and in high grades, although it is possible.
1922-S Peace Dollar Value
The low quality 1922-S Peace Dollars are easy to find and aren’t as valuable, but a high quality 1922-S that has full strike and clear surfaces is rare and can be worth thousands.
