1921-S Wheat Penny
The 1921-S Wheat Penny had a total mintage of just over 15.2 million pieces from the San Francisco Mint. The 1921 Wheat Penny wasn’t produced at the Denver Mint in this year, and even though the San Francisco Mint had a relatively lower mintage, the cost of the coin is still somewhat affordable depending on what the collector is seeking. It’s possible to find uncirculated Mint State 1921-S Wheat Pennies, but the highest grades seem to be more rare.
History of the 1921-S Wheat Penny
The 1921-S Wheat Penny is a valuable coin, even more so because of the desire for coins struck with the San Francisco mint mark. Cherrypicking is advised to make sure you find a coin that is well struck with attractive surfaces. The 1921-S Wheat Penny appears to be more rare in the highest uncirculated grades, and will likely command top dollar if you find them. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the S mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.
1921-S Wheat Penny Worth
The 1921-S Wheat Penny value ranges from around $2,000 for the higher Mint State brown varieties, although Gem condition examples don’t seem to appear on the market, and the red varieties can reach upwards of $27,000 for some of the higher grade Mint State coins. The 1921-S Wheat Penny would be a worthwhile find to add to any Wheat Penny series collection.
