1915-D Wheat Penny

1915-D Wheat Penny

The 1915-D Wheat Penny had a total mintage of just over 22 million from the Denver Mint. This is significantly more than the previous year that had one of the lower mintages in the series of barely over a million. The 1915-D Wheat Penny is much more affordable than the previous year. Although it is one of the more scarce coins, making it a semi-key date, it is a more underrated coin within the series. This makes it a great one to collect if you can find one with a sharp strike and possibly an intense red in the Full Red version because the cost will be cheaper for an equally beautiful and scarce coin.

History of the 1915-D Wheat Penny

The 1915-D Wheat Penny is an undervalued coin in the series, possibly due to its middle of the road mintage, but it is still scarce compared to some of the other coins in the series. It’s possible to find this coin for lower prices while adding value to your collection because of its worth. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the D mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.

1915-D Wheat Penny Worth

The 1915-D Wheat Penny value ranges from the dollars to less than a thousand for a brown version of the coin in Mint State, to upwards of over $40,000 for Full Red high grade coins. The 1915-D Wheat Penny usually has a decent strike, and is worth the effort to find one with a sharp strike and attractive luster. This is a great coin to add to any Wheat Penny series collection.
