1914 Indian Head Gold Coin

The 1914 Indian Head Gold Coin had a total mintage of just 240,000 coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This is a smaller mintage than some of the previous years. Possibly due to this low mintage, it is the second rarest coin in the entire series and will command a premium price tag for the highest grades of the coin. In MS65 or better, this coin is possibly just as rare as the highly valuable 1911-D Indian Head Gold Coin, and some argue that it is more rare in these higher grades. 

 

History of the 1914 Indian Head Gold Coin

The 1914 Indian Head Gold Coin is very difficult to find in higher grades. It is typically a sharply struck coin with above average luster. Some of the coins show signs where the die buckled near the rims, but they are more of the exception. As with most of the coins in the series, the surface of the 1914 Indian Head Quarter Eagle shows a granular surface on most coins with a coloring that is usually a greenish yellow gold. With some careful searching, it is possible to find light rose or copper colored examples that are beautiful. Bela Lyon Pratt designed the Indian Head Gold Coin and the 1914 is considered a key date within the series for its rarity and value. 

 

1914 Indian Head Quarter Eagle Value

The 1914 Indian Head Quarter Eagle value reaches upwards of over $103,000 for the highest grades of the coin, usually around Mint State 67. It’s possible to find this coin in somewhat lower prices, but it will likely always command a premium due to its rarity and perceived value. The 1914 Indian Head Gold Coin would make a worthwhile addition to any Indian Head Gold Coin series collection.
