1913-S Wheat Penny

The 1913-S Wheat Penny had a total mintage of just over 6.1 million coins from the San Francisco Mint. The San Francisco Mint typically produced much fewer coins than the Philadelphia Mint. The 1913-S Wheat Penny is a special coin within the series. It is scarce in circulated grades, rare in Mint State, and very rare in Gem condition for the Full Red versions that usually have a red color to them. If you find this coin in its highest grades, expect to pay a pretty penny for it.

History of the 1913-S Wheat Penny

The 1913-S Wheat Penny is a harder to find coin in the series and is often considered a semi-key date in circulated grades. It’s believed to be almost impossible to find a Full Red version in the highest Mint State grades of the coin, and will be very valuable to the Wheat Penny series collection if found. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the S mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.
