The 1885-S Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint with only a total mintage of just under 1.5 million. The 1885-S Morgan Dollar in Mint State typically has a frosty luster and bagmarks from being stored. Well-struck coins in higher grades are often harder to find these days and are worth the time it takes to cherrypick the very best ones available for your collection.
History of the 1885-S Morgan Dollar
Morgan Silver Dollars were minted beginning in 1878, and only halted temporarily in 1904 due to a shortage of silver at the time. The 1885-S Morgan Silver Dollar had a relatively low mintage for the San Francisco Mint, and many of the coins that were released into circulation ended up being melted down. Many of the coins were stored at the San Francisco Mint during the first part of the century, but people weren’t aware of it. Eventually after World War II, many of these uncirculated coins were released onto the market during a coin market boom, and eventually the higher prices for a once rare coin dropped.
1885-S Morgan Silver Dollar Value
The 1885-S Morgan Silver Dollar Value ranges from under a hundred dollars to upwards of the tens of thousands. It is believed that hundreds of thousands of these coins were melted down as a provision of the 1918 Pittman Act, and many available coins have a light strike usually at the center of the reverse. High grade, Mint State coins with a sharp strike are out there. It just takes some worthwhile effort to find them.
