1884 Indian Head Penny

1884 Indian Head Penny

The 1884 Indian Head Penny had a smaller mintage than the past couple of years with around 23.3 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. With the relatively high mintage, this coin can be found easy in circulated grades at very affordable prices that most collectors can afford. This coin becomes scarce in uncirculated grades around MS64 and MS65, and grades above this become very scarce, especially in red condition. The Indian Head Cents range in color between brown, red-brown, and red varieties.

History of the 1884 Indian Head Penny

The 1884 Indian Head Penny is possible to find well-struck, but also requires some effort and cherrypicking to seek them out. This coin is difficult to find in the highest Mint State grades, and would likely command a higher premium if they were located. This coin was designed by Chief Engraver at the time, James Barton Longacre. This is a popular coin due to how old it is and being struck during major parts of American history like the Civil War. The obverse of the coin shows a feminine figure wearing a Native American headdress. The reverse portrays the words “one cent” and a laurel wreath and shield fill the borders of the coin.

1884 Indian Head Penny Value

The 1884 Indian Head Penny value ranges somewhere between two thousand and six thousand dollars for the highest grades of the coin. This is a relatively affordable coin in the grades it can be found, especially compared to some of the previous years. It can be found at even lower prices, less than one hundred dollars, by seeking out circulated coins. The 1884 Indian Head Cent would make an affordable and beautiful addition to any Indian Head Penny series collection.
