The United States Trade dollar was created to compete with other nations from East Asia that already had international dollars to trade with. They created this dollar after the American Silver dollar failed to be an international coin to trade with. The United States Trade dollars design consisted of a full-bodied figure of Liberty facing left, she held an olive branch. The reverse depicted an eagle spreading its wings. The coin was designed by William Barber who at the time the coin was minted was the chief engraver of the mint. The Trade dollar was minted from 1873-1885.
