Roman times saw great social, political, and military upheavals. Fleeing armies and civilians seeking refuge secretly buried their valuables in ceramic jars for safekeeping, anticipating some future return, which in many cases never occurred. A minority of these jars were perfectly sealed in protected areas. Most were obviously buried sloppily in haste. Only a very small quantity -- a tiny fraction of 1% of unearthed bronze coins of this age were both buried in perfect condition initially, and also survived the eons protected in MS condition. Normally the combined seepage of moisture, oxygen, and soil chemistry severely corroded the bronze metal.

Then again, occasionally a lucky jar is found holding newly minted coins that were relatively undamaged over the centuries. Under such ideal conditions, tucked well into the center of a group of coins, are a handful of examples where the elements did not reach them. Only a small quantity of these special coins earn the MS grade. They are the rarest, most beautiful, most valuable, and most desirable of all Roman bronze coins. This is some feat considering these coins are nearly 1,700 years old.

This coin was issued by Constantine the Great to commemorate the founding of the city of Constantinopolis. The obverse of the coin features a helmeted goddess while the reverse features a Guardian Angel. Each piece has been certified by NGC to be authentic and in impeccable MS condition. The photos do these coins no justice.
