Designed by Adolphe A. Weinman for the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin, the Walking Liberty engraving has been reissued for the American Silver Eagle series and appears on its obverse side. On this side, Liberty is walking with an outstretched arm toward the sunlit horizon. Her hair and gown are blowing in the breeze and in her other arm, she is clutching a spray of oak and laurel branches, symbols of national glory. The word “Liberty” is engraved above her head. Below her figure is the year of minting. Beside her, the motto “In God We Trust” is engraved.

The 2017-W American Silver Eagle Proof coin features a reverse side that features a bold heraldic eagle that has been updated by sculptor John Mercanti. There are 13 stars etched above the eagle’s head and are meant to represent the nation’s 13 original colonies.
