This 2006-S Silver Dollar was minted to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Old San Francisco Mint, a.k.a "The Granite Lady." The Mint is known for playing a pivotal role in the recovery of San Francisco after the great fire. These gold half eagles are a mashup of old and new designs!
Its obverse features an architectural-like depiction of the "Old Granite Lady" herself, along with the words "San Francisco Earthquake and Fire Centennial" appearing along the lower border. The reverse features a recreation of the reverse from the famous Gobrecht 1906-S $5 Gold Liberty Head coin! Along with the "S" mintmark showing it was indeed minted in San Francisco, this commemorative gold coin is full of history and wonder. Only 17,500 were minted back in 2006, and since then only 8 have qualified for a pristine MS70 grade from NGC with a Wayne Miller signed label, yes just 8!
