1996-P American Silver Eagle Proof

Grab the 10th anniversary edition of this iconic series with this 1996-P American Silver Eagle proof. The American Silver Eagle coins resurrect the much-loved designs of Adolf A. Weinman who was commissioned through a competition to design of the walking liberty half dollar with oversight from the Commission of Fine Arts in 1916. The other part of this stunning silver coin was designed by the U.S. Mint's 12th chief engraver John Mercanti.

History

The Silver Eagle coins are produced as per the Liberty Coin Act, which was enacted after a long period of talks on what to do with the country's silver stockpile. It was believed there was more silver than for its strategic need and that it was worth selling off. The sales led to a decline in silver prices, however, which prompted some to contest the continued sale of silver and a decision was made to use it to make silver coins.

Design specifics

The coin is 31g resulting from its 99.7% silver content – it is 0.03% copper – and is 40mm in diameter with a reeded edge. The obverse features Lady Liberty walking across a sunset background, stars and stripes billowing behind her while she carries laurel and oak in her arms, a symbol of America's strength and power. The phrases "In God We Trust" and "Liberty" are also featured on the obverse. The reverse bears Mercanti's heraldic eagle behind a shield with 13 stars above it. It grasps the olive branch in its talon, a symbol of peace. "United States of America" and "1 Oz. Fine Silver," are inscribed on the coin along with a "P" mintmark as the 1996 Silver Eagle was minted in Philadelphia. "E Pluribus Unum" is inscribed on a banner in the bird's beak.
