Condition and Mintage

This 1988-S American Silver Eagle Proof has been certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation to be in PF70 condition and comes with UCAM designation. Its flawless condition makes it suitable for display. This coin is associated with a mintage of 557,370 and was minted in San Francisco.

History and Description

This 1988 Silver Eagle Proof features a composition of 99.9% pure silver. Though regarded as legal tender (and is marked as 1 oz Fine Silver One Dollar), these coins have been produced by the U.S. Mint to meet collector demand. Its market price is associated, therefore, with the market price of silver and collectability of the coin.

The obverse side of this 1988-S American Silver Eagle Proof features the popular 1916 Walking Liberty half dollar design created by German American sculptor and engraver Adolph A. Weinman. It shows Lady Liberty walking toward the sunlit horizon. In one arm, she is carrying branches of laurel and oak. Her other arm is outstretched toward the rising son. Collectors will note the fine artistry of this coin’s design as evidenced by artistic details like her hair and gown blowing in the breeze.

The reserve side of this American Silver Eagle proof features a bold bald eagle that was modernized for this series by sculptor John Mercanti. Above the eagle’s head are the words, “United States of America.” The coin’s denomination is engraved below.

Silver Eagle Prices

Silver Eagle coins' denomination is $1, but its value is way beyond that. Its market value will fluctuate with pricing for silver and demand among collectors. However, it’s low mintage also makes this coin increasingly sought after by collectors, which will also influence its value.
