1987 Silver Eagle History

The American silver eagle coins were first minted in 1986 and is still being minted to this day. The silver eagle's obverse was designed using Adolph Weinman's design that was featured on the walking half dollar. The design features Miss Liberty walking while carrying an American flag and an olive branch. This design is often voted as one of the most attractive coins in the world.

The reverse of the silver eagle was created by the American Mints 12th chief engraver, John Mercanti. It features a heraldic eagle and a banner with the Latin inscription, ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,’

1987 was the second year that the silver eagle coin was minted. Early silver eagles were collected in high numbers, and these coins are still popular today. In 1987, production was increased due to the popularity of the 1986 coin. 904,732 proofs were struck in 1987 at the San Francisco mint.
