The Lincoln Cent was designed by Victor D. Brenner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The designer's initials (VDB) appear on the reverse of a limited quantity of 1909 pieces, the first year of issue. The initials would not be restored to the design until 1918, on the obverse side of Lincoln's shoulder. The Lincoln Cent was the first cent to feature the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
This design is one of the most recognizable in U.S. coinage. The reverse would change again in 1959 to the Lincoln Memorial reverse designed by Frank Gasparro. The date in particular was selected to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. There are only 704 of these 1965 coins in stunning MS66 RD!
