When WWII came around, copper was in demand for the war effort. In order to conserve copper, the United States Mint ceased using copper to mint pennies in 1943 and switched to a steel coated with zinc. This was only done for one year, making this a one year only issue! Over the years many of these coins have corroded or rusted due to the metal they were stuck in. In addition to this, over 162 million coins were recalled by the Treasury and were melted down over the years. This just adds to the rarity factor of these sought after wartime issues. You will receive one 1943 Steel Penny from each mint: Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. Each 3-coin set will include three pieces in stunning choice uncirculated condition. As previously stated, the vast majority of these coins have been corroded over the years, so finding pieces in this pristine condition as such is a feat in itself.
