History Of The Silver Washington Quarter

The Washington Quarter was the first commemorative coin designed in the United States. It was designed in 1932, to honor the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington and was originally intended to only be circulated for that year. A senior engraver, John Flanagan, designed the obverse and reverse of the coin and the image of Washington is based on a statue created by Jean Antoine Houdon. Due to the depression, the United States Mint did not produce any quarters in 1933, and when demand for the coin returned for the coin in 1934, they decided to continue using the Washington design. The exact design is still used in the present day but since 1965, the coins have been made from a mix of nickel and copper.

Design Specifics

The George Washington quarter features an image of Washington facing to the left on the obverse of the coin with the word Liberty inscribed above his head. The reverse of the coin features the symbol of the President of the United States, which is an eagle with wings spread standing on a bundle of arrows with two olive sprays beneath it. Each 25 cent piece has a reeded edge, is 24.26mm wide, 1.75mm thick, and weighs 6.25g. The coins in this collection were struck with 90% silver, which contributes to their overall intrinsic value.

Silver Washington Quarter Value

The silver Washington quarters with the highest value at the 1932 "S" and "D" coins which are often valued at over a hundred dollars each. This is due to the low mintage of both these coins with only 408,000 and 436,000 produced by the San Francisco and Denver mints that year.
